Design & Build

The 14-inch Triton 300 SE is one of the most compact gaming laptops with full-power hardware. Acer lists it at 12.3 × 8.9 inches, under 0.8 inches thick and 3.75 lb (1.7 kg). Tom's Hardware found the dark-gray aluminum chassis resists flex well and the design almost professional, with only small Predator badges. Notebookcheck rates the metal base as strong, but notes the thin lid and hinges could be stiffer.

Ports are on the sides: Thunderbolt 4, two USB-A 3.2 Gen 2, HDMI 2.1 and a headphone jack, plus Killer Wi-Fi 6E. There is no card reader and no Ethernet.

Takeaway: A tidy, travel-friendly gaming laptop.

Performance

This version pairs Intel's 14-core Core i7-12700H with an RTX 3060 at 95 W. Tom's Hardware and Notebookcheck tested the Core i9 OLED model with the same graphics card; Notebookcheck expects the i7 to be only 1 to 2 percent slower. At 1080p, Tom's Hardware measured 68 fps in Shadow of the Tomb Raider, 63 fps in Far Cry 6 and 60 fps in Borderlands 3. Notebookcheck found most games stable at 1080p maximum settings, except very demanding titles such as Cyberpunk 2077.

Keep in mind that this is a 2022 design: current RTX 50-series laptops are clearly faster, so newer AAA games will need lower settings or DLSS.

Takeaway: Solid 1080p gaming in a 14-inch body. Check the current price on Amazon (opens Amazon in a new tab)

Display & Gaming Experience

Instead of the reviewers' OLED panel, this model has a 14-inch 1920 × 1200 IPS screen at 165 Hz. Tom's Hardware calls this version the better choice for most gamers, because the RTX 3060 struggled at the OLED's higher resolution. According to Notebookcheck, the IPS models also support a MUX switch.

Turbo mode in PredatorSense unlocks the full GPU power, but it is loud: Notebookcheck measured 60 dB(A) while gaming, versus 47 dB(A) in Default mode with about 5 to 6 percent less performance.

Takeaway: A fast, sensible screen; headphones help in Turbo mode.

Features & Connectivity

The keyboard has three RGB zones and shallow keys; Tom's Hardware found it functional rather than exciting, and the touchpad includes a fingerprint reader. The 16 GB of LPDDR5 is soldered, so only the SSD, Wi-Fi card and battery can be replaced. Battery life was 5 hours 43 minutes in Tom's Hardware's test and just over 6 hours in Notebookcheck's, both with the OLED model; the 180 W charger uses a barrel plug.

Takeaway: Good connectivity; choose it knowing the RAM is fixed.

Value for Money

Tom's Hardware says the Triton 300 SE expertly blends portability and performance. As an older model, it makes the most sense when the price is clearly below current RTX 50-series laptops – then it is a compact, well-built way into PC gaming.

Takeaway: For gamers who value a small, light laptop over the newest GPU. See it on Amazon (opens Amazon in a new tab)

Is the Core i7 version much slower than the Core i9 the reviewers tested?

Hardly. Notebookcheck expects only about 1 to 2 percent less CPU performance from the Core i7-12700H, and all versions use the same 95 W RTX 3060. Tom's Hardware calls this 165 Hz 1200p version the better option for most gamers.

Is it loud?

In Turbo mode, yes: Notebookcheck measured 60 dB(A) while gaming. In the Default mode it was 47 dB(A), for about 5 to 6 percent less GPU performance.

Can I upgrade it?

Only the M.2 2280 SSD, the Wi-Fi card and the battery are replaceable, per Tom's Hardware. The 16 GB of memory is soldered.

How long does the battery last?

Tom's Hardware measured 5 hours 43 minutes and Notebookcheck just over 6 hours of web browsing, both on the OLED version. The laptop cannot charge over USB-C.

Is this a current model?

No. The Triton 300 SE with 12th-gen Intel and RTX 3060 launched in 2022. It is still a capable 1080p gaming laptop, but current RTX 50-series laptops are faster.
